But the only thing I can think about is, why didn’t I put more Lou Reed or Velvet Underground on my Top 214 Albums of All Time. I ranked The Velvet Underground & Nico #3, but then put nothing else from Reed on there — no self-titled with “What Goes on,” no Transformer, no New York…
Nothing trickles in. No, there will be no half a chicken nachos at 11:58… nothing inconsequential. The last family was straight from the AAU basketball game, the kid was even all sweaty out in the six-degree night, and in his shorts, and the dad didn’t even care, he smelled like cigars, the mom had had a couple martinis, and lemme tell you, the girl was bored out of her MIND…
LIFE is an album. One is the best — either the first or the last. And without these, without the bookends, anatomical extremes to the rudiments of the art that makes us, definitions, contours, logos, FORMS, everything loses its meaning. At the ripest times in music listening, the lute has blazed, and touched adjacent to the sun, so who knows how it sounds in the mind of the arbitrary, in the middle of a forest, waiting for a tree to fall, the rest of us are DOING the cutting.
