You can quantify this day, if you want, if it’s that important to you. It’s of an odd-numbered date. It’s an even-numbered level of degrees outside, a quanitifable barometric pressure. You can quantify the amount of cocaine that’s been sold in loud, well-lit big cities since 1997, and you can survey the amount of years rapists will spend in prison. You can speed up the dial, get some “bumps,” diss alternative rock, rub shoulders with Vince Vaughn, pretend like you think everything’s funny… hey, you’ve got social media, don’t you? Let’s be honest, though. We’re never on the same path. Everybody fights their own battles in this life. One man’s joy is another man’s pain and everybody knows it. And it ends with staring at a cement cell block. And you will say “life sucks,” as if you’ve looked at a live dragonfly outside of Guerin Catholic High School in the last 24 hours, you will blame the “devil” for your actions, never believing how many people have already seen through all that, have already realized how hard this life is and developed a fortress of humility and focus for handling it. “One Hit Wonder” stands as a pillar through all of this, with an impenetrable stratosphere of humor, almost valuable for its very nonsensicality, with the walking the concept of “fame” down the street like a dog on a leash, realizing the foolishness of everything, realizing the foolish of quantifying “points,” “royalties,” “sales,” “rotation” and “hidden tracks.” There was a time, anyway, when this life felt full, when we felt like we had everything we needed, in the heart, and I was just waiting, just waiting for the right way to come along, like a blank slate shining nothing but sun, surrounded by lush, moistened flora and still hating that da** low camera angle at Roland.
