I’m not sure if anyone last night saw my outburst which has since been deleted, but it was the most unconscionable thing to hear people trying to rip on Chan Marshall. I was met with flak for naming her (or “Cat Power,” her stage name) as among the elite songwriters of our young century, with Jack White, Dan Auerbach and Billie Joe Armstrong, as I’d put it. Does it seem racist? If we’re talking producers, here’s my top five all time: 1) Pharrell Williams (2) Timbaland (3) Kanye West (4) RZA (5) Dr. Dre. That is not being a songwriter. Black Americans have, as a general rule, this century, been entrenched in areas more urban and densely populated than whites, hence tending to a more rhythmic, confrontational and multi-pronged brand of music. I mean, Black Milk makes his own beats and raps, and I’ve put his sh** on 100 times, easy. Does that make him a “songwriter”? I’ve never heard him dubbed that in my life. Songwriters can get by with an acoustic gtr. and a microphone. But then I want to list my favorite songwriters, who are behooved by the gtr./vox. format, everybody wants to get up in arms about it. Anyway, calling me ignorant about music is certainly one of the most hilariously asinine things I’ve ever heard in my life, since I’ve performed rock music and written, produced and performed hip-hop in my life, and I have a minor in music studies from IU and got an A+ in first year music theory without ever opening up the textbook. Anyway, if anybody has any clue what the problem is on the part of any of these eccentric Facebook geniuses with Chan Marshall, please fill me in. Just to review, she’s worked with Handsome Boy Modeling School, been quoted by K-os and read a Shel Silverstein book (The Giving Tree) to a class of kids before. She’s among the premiere indie songwriters of all time, along Stephen Malkmus and Dan Auerbach. I’m not sure what the conduit of these licentious millennials would be to hazarded condescension of her. It blows my mind.
