2 minutes, 13 seconds Read

In the grocery store, on my job of doing resets, I trudge through the motions, as befits this closed-circuit terrarium in which I’m rendered. The speakers belt out the finest in expedited, blank worship of the general term of “love,” with musical interfaces ranging structurally from fast food jingle to overly personal soap opera. I start to lose my sanity… I start to consider, to ruminate on the human condition, Heck, even crave a Lochmandy Motors commercial or two, just to break up the monotony. The initial chords of “Angel of Harlem” come in and I feel better for four brief minutes. Then, generally, it’s back to a sterile existence wherein nothing is psychedelic, transcendent or meaningful. Eventually, finally, the opening toms of “Higher Love” come in. I chuckle to myself about how I can identify these songs from an initial, one-second sample. Yeah, I think to myself, Steve Winwood’s pretty good. We just heard “Back in the High Life Again” earlier and I almost got caught dancing on the job. Well, this is just his ’80s solo stuff, the same guy who was in Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith, and played keys on Electric Ladyland. It’s just more throwaway pop, let’s face it. I turn toward my work, feeling strangely light, as if floating on a magic carpet, that treated piano hits me like a spoonful of Robitussin, and by the key change leading into the chorus this song is coating my face in some sort of existential goo that seems He**-bent on obliterating my erstwhile malaise and delivering me to a new land of Frank Zappa juggling and dancing for me, changing shapes and colors. Now, if I can just forget about how jealous I am of Bono, I’ll really be alright.
