“Dolby’s 12 Days of Soundgarden: Day 2 (On Soundgarden’s Undeniable Presence in Indianapolis)”

Indiana, yeah, I know, everybody’s favorite topic. Hey, we gave the country Mike Pence! Sending the country that far back in time culturally takes some skill, you’ve got to admit.
Well, it happens to be my home state, I love basketball and honest work, and… I haven’t O.D.’d on crack yet.
And like all astute young Hoosier boys, I once tried my hand at living in the “big city,” Indianapolis. It was a lot of sitting around drinking just exorbitant amounts of beer (one time I had a Hefty bag full of empties and this chick asked if I had a party, I was just like yeah), navigating the abysmal job market (2006/2007), and listening to Ghostface Killah’s album Fishscale stoned as fu**. I remember I’d get so paranoid during “Beauty Jackson” and then I’d start cracking up uncontrollably during “Heart Street.”
But my neighbors, god da**. They were these total coked-up meathead pricks. They’d throw parties all fu**in’ night, loud as he**, and I was the type of guy who had to work a lot just to pay the $425/month rent, no cable, cell phone or internet. Luckily, they didn’t listen to disco, or Gorillaz. But they were just loud — constant yelling, drinking games, and then I hear it: “Is it… TOOO THE SKYYYYYY!!!!”; and then I hear it: “And the wreck of you / Is the death of YOUUUUU!!!!!” The whole da** room, probably eight to ten people, is yelling these iconic songs out together, all in unison.
Now, I’ve heard myths of frat boys joining arms at IU at the end of the night and singing Oasis songs. I have to admit, this sounds appealing if only for its entertainment value as a spectacle. This was something along those same lines, no doubt — the phenomenon of music truly touching people and existing irrespective of its format, the concept of it as a uniting, exciting and satisfying canopy of culture. That’s what Soundgarden was and before I moved away I had a beer with my cousin at The Pub (yes there is a bar right across from where the Pacers play, which I won’t name since the name will probably change again like next week, and the full name of the bar is just “The Pub”), there are these two lesbian girls there and we get into a discussion of Chris Cornell’s musical progeny. “I’ve seen Soundgarden in concert,” says one of the lesbian chicks. “Phenomenal.”
