“Most Popular Stone Temple Pilots Songs (The Popular Vote’s Power Rankings)”

Ok, you guys are off the hook this time. I won’t “blast” you with my whole bit about how awesome the Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts album is, how it every bit lives up to its name, how the co**-smoking critic who bashed it offered “not-good” as the most descriptive pejorative in his moribund repertoire. I figured out I just couldn’t to it — the songs wouldn’t show up on the searches anyway.
Plus, it’s just so underrated anyway. I mean, people are all over Bowie’s Blackstar, the last thing he did before HE died — but does he really ROCK? Does he really like kick a** in any way (one of the last dreams Weiland reported in interview as having had was being in a bar and “kicking a**, little did he know probably how much he’d need that thick skin with all the sycophantic haters he’d rack up in his waning days on the planet).
This is the first of these “popular vote” lists I’ve put together (which again, have nothing to do with my own opinion) which will incorporate my favorite producer of all time Brendan O’Brien (yes I like him even better than Steve Albini, as the hipster’s glass of barley wine falls to the floor and breaks). A Pearl Jam list would be plausible. Rage against the Machine doesn’t have enough material, and Incubus doesn’t have a significant enough live show (think STP’s albeit crappy cover of “Dancing Days,” which happens to be really popular, and his ensuing diatribe of “Fu** nu metal” which he administered at the Family Values Tour, which is sort of like saying “Fu** Jeff Foxworthy” at a cherry pit spitting contest). Brendan O’Brien, unlike with Pearl Jam and Rage (or Incubus), was with Stone Temple Pilots from the start — he grounded them, gave them vision, personality (see “Wet My Bed,” at the end of which you hear his voice shouting), and most of all, confidence, something every young band needs, especially when they’re coming up and competing against an entire zeitgeist of northerner grungies who hate them for the very fact of where they’re from. But if you told people STP was from Siberia, they’d believe you.
One thing interesting I’ve found is that it’s next to impossible to find a pubished journal which has given STP the credit they’ve deserved, all throughout their career. Rolling Stone made themselves famous, for instance, for bashing he** out of the band, even going so far as to mock their own fan base for voting them into their best-albums-of-’94 readers’ poll. Spin isn’t much better — they extended themselves to the band nominally, but only to produce little half-page articles in which they too copiously make light of STP’s at least alleged plagiarism of other mainstream bands such as… well, all of them. Just the fact that Weiland’s group is accused of copying ALL FOUR major grunge bands — Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden — should show you that such accusations are the churlish stuff of reactionaries jealous or uncomfortable about another group of blokes crashing the party. But then, I am young and part of the overall spectrum. I’m sure there are kids out there who feel this way about Fallout Boy.
So my “critical response” section of this list’s tabulation is a little thin, to say the least. Luckily, STP had rabid fans, and they’re pretty well documented on setlist.fm, so I’ll do what I can.
